What is Pediatric Occupational Therapy (OT)?
Pediatric Occupational Therapists specialize in addressing the unique needs of newborns through adolescence. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, schools, inpatient/outpatient clinics, and in the home or community. Pediatric OTs work with children and teenagers with physical, cognitive, and developmental challenges that interfere with their ability to engage, learn, and thrive. Examples of daily activities OTs work on with children include fine-motor tasks such as putting on a shirt or writing their names. Beyond physical health, OTs also play a role in supporting mental and social wellness.
Sensory Processing Disorder, or SPD, is a neurological condition that affects how effectively the brain receives and responds to environmental stimuli. Our brains are constantly taking in information from our senses (touch, taste, smell, hearing, sight, and interoception). The ability of the Central Nervous System to interpret this information and maintain appropriate alertness and behavioral response is called Sensory Modulation. Attention, activity levels, and emotional regulation are all affected by how efficiently this system is running. Pediatric OTs specializing in Sensory Integration provide safe, organizing activities for children that target increased adaptability, coping skills, and successful interaction with the world.
My name is Molly Vizioli, and I am a Pediatric Occupational Therapist specializing in Sensory Integration. I have proudly served the community for over a decade. I began my career researching neurological conditions in children, such as cerebral palsy, at the Burke Neurological Institute in White Plains. I am a certified Autism Specialist and have worked across multiple settings, including program management and direct care of children with neurological conditions in an outpatient setting, independent contracting in schools, direct care services in a private sensory clinic, as well as Hippotherapy and Nature-Based therapy! In an ever evolving digital-age, I have seen firsthand an increase in sensory sensitivities, directly impacting our children’s ability to particpate in daily actvities. I believe Sensory OT should be fully accessible, and I am honored to offer my expertise to the community through comprehensive evaluations, caregiver training, and 1:1, tailored therapies, depending on your child’s needs and availability. You can expect compassionate, nature-based, sensory-supportive, and neuro-affirming care to help your child succeed across all settings.
